Biographie

Masaki Kobayashi (14 février 1916 – 4 octobre 1996) était un réalisateur japonais. Parmi ses films figure *Kwaidan* (1965), un recueil de quatre histoires de fantômes tirées du livre de Lafcadio Hearn, dont chacune se termine par un dénouement inattendu. Kobayashi a également réalisé La Condition humaine, une trilogie sur les conséquences de la Seconde Guerre mondiale sur un pacifiste et socialiste japonais. La durée totale des films dépasse les 9 heures. Parmi ses autres films notables, on peut citer Harakiri (1962) et La Rébellion des samouraïs (1967). Harakiri lui a valu un prix au Festival de Cannes de 1963, consolidant ainsi sa place dans l'histoire du cinéma. En 1969, il a été membre du jury du 19e Festival international du film de Berlin. Il a également été pressenti pour réaliser les séquences japonaises de Tora! Tora! Tora!, après le départ d'Akira Kurosawa du projet. Mais ce sont finalement Kinji Fukasaku et Toshio Masuda qui ont été choisis. Kobayashi, lui-même pacifiste, a été enrôlé de force dans l'armée impériale japonaise pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale, mais a refusé de combattre et a refusé toute promotion au-delà du grade de simple soldat.
