経歴

デンマーク人の父親とアメリカ人の母親のもと米ニューヨークに生まれる。セントローレンス大学を卒業後、デンマークで職を転々としながら、詩や短編小説を執筆。1980年代前半にニューヨークの舞台で俳優として活動を始め、「刑事ジョン・ブック 目撃者」（85）の端役で映画デビューする。その後、ロサンゼルスに拠点を移し、「インディアン・ランナー」（91）や「G.I.ジェーン」（97）などに出演。ファンタジー大作「ロード・オブ・ザ・リング」3部作（01～03）のアラゴルン役で一躍有名になる。「ヒストリー・オブ・バイオレンス」（05）に続いて主演したデビッド・クローネンバーグ監督の「イースタン・プロミス」（07）でアカデミー主演男優賞に初ノミネート。「はじまりへの旅」（16）で再び同賞の候補となった。俳優として活躍する一方で、自身の出版社を運営し、エッセイや写真集なども発表している。
