経歴

米ウィスコンシン州出身。大学在学中に実験演劇劇団「X Troupe」に所属し、その後ニューヨークの前衛演劇集団「The Wooster Group」のメンバーとして活動する。「天国の門」（80）で映画に初参加したが出演シーンがカットされ、続く「ラブレス」（81）でスクリーンデビュー。「プラトーン」（86）でアカデミー助演男優賞に初ノミネートされる。「最後の誘惑」（88）ではイエス・キリスト役を演じ、「ミシシッピー・バーニング」（88）、「7月4日に生まれて」（89）など社会派の作品にも出演。「シャドウ・オブ・ヴァンパイア」（00）で2度目のアカデミー助演男優賞候補となった。「スパイダーマン」シリーズ（01、04、21）などのハリウッド大作から巨匠テオ・アンゲロプロス監督作「エレニの帰郷」（08）、ラース・フォン・トリアー監督の問題作「ニンフォマニアック」（13）まで、個性派俳優として幅広く活躍。「フロリダ・プロジェクト 真夏の魔法」（17）でアカデミー助演男優賞、「永遠の門 ゴッホの見た未来」（18）で同主演男優賞にそれぞれノミネートされ、後者でベネチア国際映画祭のボルピ杯（最優秀男優賞）を受賞した。
