経歴

英エセックス生まれ、ロンドン育ち。7歳のとき「レ・ミゼラブル」を観て俳優を志し、ロンドン王立演劇学校（RADA）で演技を学ぶ。1950年に卒業し、ロイヤル・シェイクスピア・カンパニーに所属。65年、出演した舞台「The Wars of the Roses」がBBCで放送されてTVに初登場し、TV映画「The Bofors Gun」（68）で英国アカデミー助演男優賞を受賞する。1924年のパリ・オリンピックの出来事を描いた「炎のランナー」（81）でカンヌ国際映画祭コンペティション部門の助演男優賞を受賞、作品賞以下4部門で受賞したアカデミー賞でも、助演男優賞にノミネートされた。以降は「フィフス・エレメント」（97）、「ロード・オブ・ザ・リング」3部作（01～03）、「アビエイター」（04）、「レミーのおいしいレストラン」（07・声の出演）などの話題作を地に足のついた演技で支えた。89年、大英帝国勲章を受章。98年、ナイトの称号を授与された。 20年6月、ロンドンで逝去。
