1930年生于东京，父亲是日本著名剧作家岸田国士。1946年高中毕业后进入自由学院高等科学习，49年毕业后进入文学座负数演剧研究所。53年出演了由今井正导演的她的处女作《浑浊》。59年，因演出《蔷薇与海盗》等获得以其父之名命名的文学座的岸田国士奖，成为戏剧界的名人。从影后也成就非凡，1962年，因在市川昆的名作《破戒》和小津安二郎的《秋刀鱼之味》中的出色表演而获得日本《每日电影》蓝绶带奖最佳女配角奖。虽然在多部影片中她一直以配角出现，但其表演很受很评。多年来一直活跃于戏剧舞台、电影及电视荧幕上。54年她与男演员仲谷升结婚，78年离婚。 2006年12月17日下午3点33分，岸田今日子因脑肿瘤导致呼吸不全而在东京都内的医院去世，享年76岁。
